Despite having asthma, Kudzai Mhondiwa loved playing soccer more than anything. Playing from a young age taught him the power of community, the value of teamwork and how to have resilience in the face of difficulty. As an AdventHealth team member today, he still carries the lessons he learned from a young age into his career and in fulfilling one of his life’s goals: becoming the coach he wished he had as a young boy.
Keep reading to learn more about Kudzai’s story and how soccer taught him the joy of giving back through coaching.
Building the Foundation
Growing up in Cork, Ireland, Kudzai fell in love with soccer at the age of 8. To Kudzai, soccer was more than just a sport — it was his passion. The disciplines he learned from the game inspired him to become the leader he is today. “One thing I’ve really been looking forward to doing in my life is to become a coach for a young high school soccer team,” said Kudzai. “When I was younger, I wished I had a coach who had my back. I wish I had a coach who spoke to me some of the very things I needed to hear when I was a young kid.” As a high school soccer coach today, he’s always looking for ways to be an anchor for his players, helping them succeed both on and off the field. He’s found his passion for leading by giving back to his players the very things he wished he had growing up.
Always Lessons, Never Losses
“These boys have really taught me what it is to be resilient. They show me what it is to go through tough times but also come out on the field and have that same level of energy no matter what is going on in their personal lives,” explains Kudzai. This lesson has carried into his professional life. Being a high school soccer coach showed him that he can bring that same spirit from the field into the workplace to foster meaningful relationships and build a stronger sense of community. Whether you’re on the field or at your desk, Kudzai believes there’s never a losing moment — he’s learned that there are always lessons and never losses.
