Matthew Gawart, MD

Matthew Gawart, MD is a board-certified general surgeon who provides comprehensive surgical care with a strong focus on patient education, compassion, and timely treatment. Inspired by his grandmother, a charge nurse at a small community hospital, Dr. Gawert developed an early interest in medicine and service. His calling to surgery was solidified while scrubbing in with a hometown general surgeon during high school, an experience that shaped his commitment to hands-on, patient-centered care. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska, completed medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and finished his general surgery residency with the University of Illinois Chicago Metropolitan Group Hospitals. Dr. Gawart treats a wide range of general surgery conditions, including hernias, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, and colon cancer. He performs procedures ranging from biopsies and lipoma removals to major surgical operations involving organ removal. Guided by AdventHealth’s mission of whole-person care, Dr. Gawart is dedicated to caring for the body, mind, and spirit of every patient he serves.

Outside of the operating room, Dr. Gawart enjoys staying active and spending time outdoors. He is an avid golfer and enjoys skiing, hiking, and running.

He emphasizes clear communication, ensuring patients understand their procedure, recovery expectations, and treatment options so they feel confident and supported throughout their surgical journey.
