Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be one of the most stressful and pivotal moments in someone’s life. The words “you have cancer” can create overwhelming and upsetting emotions.
You may feel confused and numb, unable to process the news. You may wonder if you could have done something to prevent it or to discover it sooner. Or you may feel as if your life is out of control and don’t know what the future holds.
Often, the very first question is: “Why me?”
But after the initial shock wears off, another question quickly appears: “How can I be sure I’ll receive the best cancer care possible?”
That’s why it’s so important to know about AdventHealth Cancer Institute Shawnee Mission’s new partnership with UChicago Medicine, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. This collaboration provides AdventHealth Cancer Institute and its patients with expanded access to advanced cancer treatments, clinical trials and research from one of the nation’s top cancer programs.
“I believe our affiliation with UChicago Medicine is a true partnership that will enhance care for our patients and move our cancer program to the next level,” said Erin Reed, Regional Executive Director, AdventHealth Cancer Services.
After more than a decade of providing cancer care at the AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission, the AdventHealth Cancer Institute opened in May 2024 on the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission campus. The facility was designed with patients in mind and includes chemotherapy infusion, pharmacy, imaging, lab services and physical therapy all in one convenient location. It also features the region’s only MRI-guided radiation therapy, proven to shorten treatment times, improve outcomes and reduce side effects.
Now, AdventHealth Cancer Institute patients will gain critical access to sponsored clinical trials and select industry trials within UChicago Medicine Cancer Network, along with virtual options to get a second opinion with a network of the nation’s top physicians.
UChicago Medicine is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, ranked No. 12 in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
“We opened the doors of our new Cancer Institute in 2024, focusing on increasing support services within our building to improve psycho-social care and support for patients. Now, we are building on the foundation of care and adding new ways to cure cancer in the Kansas City community — expanding the healing ministry of Christ. Becoming a leader in expert, whole-person, cancer care close to home,” said Reed.
Studies show that receiving cancer care close to home enhances health outcomes and general well-being. For instance, the burden of traveling for cancer care can cause mental and physical stress that can hinder cancer therapy. It can even cause some patients to stop going to their treatments. Additional stress can come from the added expense of travel and time away from home and family.
“Not only do our patients receive care close to home in a setting that’s familiar and easy to navigate — we can offer our oncology providers world-class resources not otherwise available in the Kansas City region,” said Reed.
As cancer cases rise, the partnership with UChicago Medicine will significantly enhance AdventHealth Cancer Institute’s capabilities. As a result, our patients can look forward to receiving the best care possible without leaving the area.
“Blending the two together means that patients will never wonder if they’re receiving the best options for their cancer care. We are stronger together,” said Reed.
