VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES, Fla., October 25, 2016 During the month of November, the six Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties which comprise the Florida Hospital East Florida Region will celebrate American Diabetes Month to bring attention to this disease and the tens of millions of people affected by it.
- 1 in 11 Americans has diabetes today.
- Every 23 seconds, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes.
- 86 million Americans are at risk for diabetes.
- Diabetes causes more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer combined.
Here are the upcoming diabetes awareness events, hosted by the Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties in November:

Nov. 8 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., join Florida Hospital Flagler for a complimentary breakfast and seminar featuring internal medicine physician Dr. Haroldo Melo. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue in support of diabetes awareness and will learn about the signs, symptoms and prevention of diabetes. Guests will also hear from a local couple, Laura and John Gilvary, as they discuss their personal experience with diabetes. This event will be in the

Nov. 14 from 2 to 5 p.m., join Florida Hospital DeLand at the
DeLand Chisholm Center, 520 S. Clara Ave., DeLand, for a free diabetes health fair and seminar. The Florida Hospital DeLand diabetes team will be on site, as well as vendors and exhibitors that help those living with diabetes. Additionally, there will be 10-minute exercise sessions throughout the event and guest speakers Cindy Brummit who will discuss Celebrating 50 Years with Diabetes and registered dietician and physician assistant Suzanne Villalobos will address Managing Diabetes and Building A Care Team. Nov. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m., join Florida Hospital Fish Memorial for a community garden groundbreaking and farm-to-table celebration. Designed by students from the University of Florida landscape architectural department, and in collaboration with Volusia County University of Florida Agricultural Extension office, this community garden on Florida Hospital Fish Memorials campus will be available to employees, community members, and local schools. During the opening celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to visit the hospitals diabetes garden cart, staffed by a diabetes educator and complete with diabetes education and menu suggestions. Additionally, participants will enjoy free diabetes-friendly food samples and will learn how natures nutrition can help manage Type 2 Diabetes. The event will also feature LaManda Joy, an award-winning master gardener and the founder and executive director of the Peterson Garden Project, an organization that manages seven community gardens and nearly 3,000 gardeners in Chicago, Illinois. Joy will share her inspiring story of building a healthy community while guests enjoy live music, gift drawings and farm-to-table refreshments. This event will be outdoors on the
