DELAND, Fla., November 23, 2016 On Nov. 12, golfers joined Florida Hospital DeLand for a golf tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand.
The event raised $2,600 to benefit the Florida Hospital DeLand Foundation chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) fund.
COPD is a progressive disease that develops slowly and makes it hard to breathe. It can cause coughing that produces large amounts of mucus, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms. Symptoms often worsen over time and can limit the ability to do routine activities.
Nationwide, COPD is a major cause of disability, and it's the third leading cause of death. Currently, millions of people are diagnosed with COPD, but many more people may have the disease and not even know it.
It was a beautiful day for golf and all pledged to help see this event return and grow next year, said Dave Thompson, Florida Hospital DeLand registered respiratory therapist and COPD educator. Three of the golfers won the putting contest, forcing a dramatic play off that Ryan Barnett won.
The EMPros team of Wayne Carroll, Dr. Ivan Menezes, Joel Russell Jr., and Joel Russell Sr. won the golf tournament with a score of 56.
