Laparoscopic Surgery

In laparoscopic surgery, specially designed instruments -- including a laparoscope with a tiny light and camera at the end -- are employed to carry out an operation through very small external incisions. This advanced technique, which is increasingly employed in a wide variety of fields, can result in fewer post-operative complications, a quicker recovery time, less scarring and other potential benefits for the patient in comparison to traditional, “open” surgical methods. Some laparoscopic surgeries involve the use of a computer-assisted robotic system such as the Da Vinci™ platform. Another form of laparoscopic surgery is called “single-incision surgery,” where the entire operation takes place through just one incision that is perhaps two inches long.
