Expertise of Shawn Cox, MD

Biography: Shawn Cox, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician who provides primary care to AdventHealth team members and their families. As part of his practice, he performs annual wellness exams and health screenings, offers chronic disease management and cares for men’s and women’s health. In 2000, Dr. Cox began his medical career as an emergency room physician at Abbeville Area Medical Center in South Carolina. He practiced medicine in Tennessee from 2002 to 2005, serving as an admitting physician at Skyline Medical Center, Centennial Medical Center and Baptist Hospital. During this time, he also worked as a private practice physician at Metro Center HealthCare Group. From 2004 to 2005, he served as the medical director and private practice physician at North Nashville Family Health Center. Additionally, his career includes roles at Premise Health (formerly CareHere) and Solantic Urgent Care in Florida. Dr. Cox spent six years providing medical care at the Pasco County Health Department before practicing urgent care medicine at AdventHealth Centra Care from 2012 to 2024.   Dr. Cox graduated with a medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He is board-certified in family medicine and artificial intelligence medicine. His medical internship and residency were completed at the Self Regional Healthcare Family Practice in Greenwood, South Carolina. From 2006 to 2011, he was a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova Southeastern University. Additional degrees earned by Dr. Cox include a Master of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
