Lance Palumbo’s connection to Colorado’s outdoor lifestyle runs deep. For 30 years, rock climbing wasn’t just a sport to him—it was a fundamental part of his identity and a cherished activity he shared with his family.
But, when Lance began experiencing severe arthritis pain in the 2020s, compounded by a meniscus tear, he faced the devastating prospect of having to give up his outdoor activities altogether. “These activities brought me so much mental, cognitive and physical strength, as well as precious time with family. I was so worried I’d never be able to do them again,” he recalls.
In 2022, Lance met with Dr. Todd Miner at AdventHealth Medical Group Colorado Joint Replacement at Porter. In the consultation, they talked at length about his options, with Dr. Miner making it clear that Lance’s goals were ultimately achievable.
“Dr. Miner understood that activities such as rock climbing were like a lifeline to me, and he reassured me I would be able to keep doing them after the surgery. It was such a relief.” Ultimately, Lance agreed to total knee replacement surgery, understanding it was the only way to continue living life on his terms.
Post-surgery, Lance worked diligently through rehabilitation, determined to return to the sports and family adventures he loved. Within months of his surgery, Lance was achieving major milestones: He went climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park and hiked a 14er (mountain peak with an elevation of at least 14,000 feet) with his daughter.
In just over a year post-surgery, Lance climbed the Via Ferrata in A-Basin (North America’s highest steel cable climbing route). He explains, “I have the mentality that continuing to do hard, meaningful things and challenging myself is really what it means to live life to its fullest.”
Lance continues to achieve his lifelong dreams – even in his career. In 2025 he started his own homecare business, which continues to grow and thrive. “I want to continue to help people and have adventures,” Lance says. “And thanks to Dr. Miner and his team…I can.”
Recovering from joint replacement surgery can mean not just moving again, but thriving—returning to the mountains, the trails, the careers, and the adventures that make life meaningful.
